It's safe to say that I will forever be in the minority of Mac users who use and actually rely on text navigation and selection shortcuts such as ⌥→, ⌥←, ⌥⇧→, ⌥⇧←, etc.

This means that I will forever be a victim of software engineers who cater to the needs of the majority, and neglect to make sure that their choices don’t interfere with the use of these shortcuts.

Case in point : it’s impossible to rely on these shortcuts in tables in Apple’s Numbers and Pages apps.🤬

@jik@federate.social Covid seems to have become endemic, so I consider my Covid booster to be analogous to a flu shot. I get my flu shot in Aug/Sept, and Covid in Sept/Oct, depending upon when the new formulations are released. (Although, who knows what the future holds on that front.)

(I never used to care about this stuff, but I had a stem cell transplant right before Covid hit, so I had to have ALL of my vaccinations redone. Masking was a non-issue, because I had been masking in public for a year before Covid. But now I make sure that every shot I can get goes in my body.)

@jik@federate.social @paul_ipv6 In SoCal, I had home ec as an elective in grade 6; however finances and such weren't covered in that class, that was "health and family" which was a required course in highschool that I took during summer school. Many schools no longer even offer home ec courses, which is an absolute travesty!

(And I agree about typing. I took typing as a full year course in grade 9, which also included document preparation/formatting, all on IBM Selectrics. Sadly, that was the last year it was offered as a full year course; subsequent students would only be able to take a single semester of typing. But the ability to touch type is still with me 30 years later.)

I’ve been poeming about how my nouns keep conversioning to verbs.

      Verb Your Enthusiasm

I recall the first time it circumstanced,
this problem that routines with my words –
I was in the kitchen, plating my food,
when my nouns conversioned to verbs.

Friending others with similar troubles,
we workshopped hard at it for days,
as we dialogued in search of solutions,
and flipcharted the hours away.

I can’t stop myself languaging weirdly.
Are they called nerbs or vouns? I’m not sure.
The doctors cannot antidote me,
while to poem provisions no cure.

Now I diarise each time they’re eventing –
whenever I coffee or Youtube or gift.
I’d podium, too – if I ever won anything,
and it weren’t for those medalling kids.

If I had to share one clip from John Oliver's great segment on the attacks targeting trans athletes, it would be this one.

Attacks against trans women in sports all come down to one motivator: blatant sexism and gross misogyny. Misogyny that impacts and targets every single woman on the planet, cis *and* trans.

Their one and only goal is to permanently define women as fundamentally inferior to men. For them, the mere existence of trans women is a threat to that scheme.

The "name"/"call" issue wouldn't ever arise. I guess the Japanese have it correct with "ジムです" ... No need to explain, just state the facts

In the example you gave, I—as a native speaker of American English, but a frequent viewer of UK, AU, IE, and NZ television—feel that "called" and "named" are quite interchangeable. I would even put forward the idea that "named" is actually in decline, and "called" has become the prevalent version in the US.

(I think this all relates to the American variant of English moving towards greater generalization in speech, and the preference towards weakened versions of adjectives. Which are proper: strung or stringed, snuck or sneaked? Soon, "better/best" will become "more good/most good"; language is a living thing, and constantly evolving, although not necessarily for the better.)

I asked one of my (male) friends to stop using the phrase “man up” and he has been using “fortify” for the past two weeks instead and it’s just a little thing but honestly it makes a difference

and tbh it's also pretty funny when I start to deflate in the library and he leans over and goes “FORTIFY”

reply from phantom-locked:

Dude, fortify is bangin’. That makes things like you're some kind of RPG character. Fortify is way better than “man up.”

As I understand the situation, Proton's CEO expressed support for the nomination of an individual that Trump chose. The greater internet took this singular nod of support for a singular individual and expanded it into Proton supporting Trump and all of his policies.
