@arstechnica

Neve heard of this device before.

Likely, I'll never hear of it again.

Like cooking without it is impossible. 😏

@arstechnica Seems when something has the word smart in it 's name it's target demographic is often someone who's not smart at all.

@arstechnica This is so ridiculous that I wrote a 'Modest Proposal' for my books to satirize it. See if you can get the joke: inkican.com/modest-proposal-up

@arstechnica@mastodon.social While this is a crappy move, the impact is being blown out of proportion. The devices are still fully functional, unlike those from other brands that require an app for any functionality.

@robert @arstechnica I have Souse Vide device that doesn’t even have an accompanying app, so I’m not sure why you’d need one. The regularity of news about wannabe cartoon villain CEOs reneging on features or outright bricking purchased products; getting all “fuck this company” and swearing off further purchases is objectively a sensible reaction.

@AlexanderMars@mastodon.social It's so you can be lazy and set the temperature from your phone. Or pick a recipe, and it will set the temp/time as specified.

@robert@cornershop.network @robert yeah, I don’t see it being an advantage. In my experience most apps that accompany appliances are fucking rubbish, even from companies that are supposedly good at that shit. Still, I don’t think the response is blown out of proportion, it’s not like Anova’s office was sacked by an angry mob of souse vide aficionados.

@AlexanderMars@mastodon.social Well, if you ever wish to use Anova's app, you have a week to create an account and avoid the subscription fee. (Also, while their app is utter crap, there are a few recipes in it that are quite good; J. Kenji López-Alt of The Food Lab/Serious Eats did a collaboration with them several years ago.) Also, Anova's products tend to hit the sweet-spot of price, precision/accuracy, and performance.

@robert gimme a break, fuck Anova, they can go out of business for all I care.

@arstechnica This step has been anticipated by every person who has ever read a sci-fi dystopia or cyberpunk novel. Which is why if the ad copy includes "app" or "register", I do not buy. A potentiometer dial control and mechanical shutoff timer is fine, thanks.

Any product that requires an app to work doesn't belong to you, no matter how much you paid for it.

Does anyone here have their locale set to ?

@fosskers@emacs.ch I used to, but so few applications were properly localized/internationalized. And trying to mix parts of a locale (esp. currency and number formatting), and lack of cohesion across operating systems, makes EO a no-go until the OS suppliers "do the right thing".

@fosskers@emacs.ch

@robert Thanks. My app has eo localisations, and I was curious how people went about configuring that. In /etc/locale.gen it's in there as just eo without a country specifier, which had caused a bug in the past.

What did you set your $LANG to?

@fosskers@emacs.ch To be honest, it's been over a decade, so I don't exactly remember. It may have been eo_XX-UTF8, but that's just a guess.

@fosskers@emacs.ch Thinking back on it, in Linux I used eo.UTF-8.
