@daringfireball no way, I am not going to connect my TV to the Internet.

@daringfireball Really shitty because we picked the LG because back then it came with the least bullshit of all TV brands. I just did a factory reset of our LG and told the family that the TV is just a display for the Switch and Apple TV now. I don't think we will miss out on anything.

@daringfireball

💯 right on this.

I LOVE my LG 77” Oled. It’s a wonderful TV.

Only ever connected to AppleTV.

@daringfireball in the end all good things turn to shit with few exceptions (so far Apple have resisted.. just).

@daringfireball@mastodon.social To everyone poo-pooing this "revelation": do you have an LG TV and have you seen an ad? I have several LG TVs (some internet connected), and none have displayed any ads. Is your outrage justified, or just a byproduct of a quick response without the genuine facts?!

@robert I don't know because my beloved LG TV hasn't touched the internet in 4 years.

@daringfireball This is even worse. I have an LG TV which I really like, but I’ve turned off WiFi now. (I watch everything through an Apple TV.)

@daringfireball my Toshiba "smart" TV is not connected to the internet, and the NVIDIA Shield I use to stream from my server is running an alternative launcher to kill the ads. It's a much better experience.

@daringfireball Same. LG Oled from 2019 (C9 65 inch). i plug an ethernet cable into it once per year to check for firmware updates. last one two months ago. other than that, Apple TV 4K rev2 is the only thing connected to the internet.

granted, i wonder those long until Apple gets tempted by that sweet sweet ad revenue.

@daringfireball All my TV’s are explicitly blocked on the router, just in case the TV settings aren’t honoured. All my viewing is via an ATV, though, I have to say, I’m little upset, that Apple have now decided to start auto-playing media from other sources, after I’ve finished watching media that I own. Not on, Apple, not on….

@daringfireball mine doesn’t. It doesn’t have internet access. 👍🏼👍🏼🤦🏼‍♂️

@daringfireball Same (ATV + LG), but there is one problem -- LGs have a "Hey, LG" type listener, that try as I might cannot be disabled! And since it's offline, it produces an error ever time it accidentally gets triggered. POS

@MonaApp Hey there. When I type the apostrophe in Mona for Mac it says right single quotation mark when it is an apostrophe. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Please let me know.

@mabelinr I think this is a macOS issue and needs to be fixed by Apple.

@mabelinr@mastodon.social @MonaApp@mastodon.social Go to System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Edit and disable “Use smart quotes and dashes”. (This is one of the first things I change on any new macOS install.)

@robert Thanks for your feedback. I really appreciate it. I’ve tried that and no go. It won’t fix my problem. I’m going to have to do a fresh reinstall of macOS. I am currently running macOS Monterey. But again, thanks for your help.

Neve heard of this device before.

Likely, I'll never hear of it again.

Like cooking without it is impossible. 😏

@arstechnica@mastodon.social While this is a crappy move, the impact is being blown out of proportion. The devices are still fully functional, unlike those from other brands that require an app for any functionality.
